An early vaccine dose almost certainly would not have saved either infant, because both were far too young to receive even the outbreak-time early MMR dose. Stoltzfus, the coroner has been explicit: she died of cardiac arrest due to measles, even though she also had Amish lethal microcephaly, a rare genetic disorder that sharply limits survival and makes infants highly vulnerable to respiratory infections. In that case, the disorder made her exceptionally fragile, but measles appears to have been the immediate cause that ended her life when it did. The broader public-health lesson is less about vaccinating these infants directly than about shielding babies too young to be vaccinated by maintaining high community MMR coverage around them.
