Summary
A single 2025 visit to a naturist club near Colchester left the writer saying his lifelong paruresis vanished, with no recurrence since.
The breakthrough came after he linked his inability to urinate in public toilets to fear of being seen naked, then found that stripping off at the club dissolved that anxiety.
A stop at a garden centre on the way home became the first test: faced with only the middle of 3 urinals free, he used it without difficulty, then repeated that success days later in Norwich.
The visit grew out of research for a book on humans' spiritual ties to the land and introduced him to the Christian Naturist Fellowship, whose members argue naturism and Christianity are compatible.
He said the experience also reset his body-image assumptions, showing how public nudity can strip away social pretence as well as a decades-old fear.
