Overview
The 2026 discovery of Bianfu Cave in Yunnan, China, began with an ecological restoration project that led scientists to a treasure trove of Denisovan fossils and tools. Despite much of the cave being destroyed by quarrying and the warm, humid climate degrading ancient DNA, researchers used protein analysis and micro-CT scans to confirm the remains belonged to at least three Denisovans. These ancient humans relied on simple stone tools and abundant organic materials from their rich environment, showing formidable strength and cooperative hunting skills. However, when technologically advanced Homo sapiens arrived, Denisovans were eventually outcompeted and disappeared around 30,000 years ago.
