The name survived Spanish colonial rule, Mexican governance, the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, U.S. territorial status, and finally statehood in 1912. Over that time, it became tied to the region’s identity rather than to any single government. That identity is why the reaction has been so strong. For many residents, “New Mexico” reflects a long and layered heritage shaped by Indigenous communities, Pueblo peoples, Navajo, Apache, Hispanic and Nuevomexicano traditions, and later American influences. Historians and residents alike say the name is inseparable from the state’s cultural memory and sense of place. The legal barrier is equally important. New Mexico’s constitution explicitly says, “The name of this state is New Mexico.” That means a president cannot change it by executive order or by directing federal mapmakers. Any official renaming would require a constitutional amendment approved by the New Mexico Legislature and then by the state’s voters. So the name endures for two reasons: it carries more than 400 years of history, and it is protected by state law that puts the final decision in New Mexicans’ hands.
