Launched on Aug. 30, NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope began its mission with the first active space coronagraph built to directly photograph exoplanets.
The instrument suppresses starlight to a few parts per billion and uses deformable mirrors with hundreds of tiny actuators to correct distortions in real time.
