Undercover video obtained by Fox News Digital shows Roy Cooper refusing to sign the "Promise to America," saying Democrats need a "wide spectrum" that includes socialist-aligned candidates.
Cooper framed that stance as party unity, arguing Democrats are "in a foxhole" and must "stick together" to resist what he called autocracy and "take our government back."
His campaign said Cooper is "not a socialist" and stressed his record of working with North Carolina's Republican-led legislature, while declining to address whether his platform conflicts with Democratic Socialists of America positions.
The remarks land as Cooper, 69, runs to replace retiring Republican Sen. Thom Tillis in a competitive Nov. 3 race against GOP nominee Michael Whatley, giving Republicans a new line of attack over the party's left flank.
