Norwegian Cruise Line Closes Prima Hot Tubs After 3 Legionnaires' Cases

Three former passengers who sailed on the 3,200-passenger Norwegian Prima in May and July were diagnosed with Legionnaires' disease, prompting the line to shut public hot tubs and private heated whirlpools.
Norwegian said exposure has not been confirmed on the ship, but it is working with the CDC, notifying affected guests and crew, and keeping the facilities closed while sampling and any needed remediation continue.
Test results from the ship's water fixtures have so far been negative, even as the company says it has stepped up sanitation procedures as a precaution.
Legionnaires' disease is a bacterial pneumonia spread by inhaling contaminated water droplets from warm-water systems such as hot tubs; it is not spread person to person and is treatable with antibiotics.
The ship-specific investigation comes as New York City health officials separately warned of a broader Legionnaires' outbreak with 23 confirmed cases and 17 hospitalizations.
