23-year-old Ben Shelton said his 0-5 record against Alexander Zverev does not intimidate him as he prepares for Sunday's US Open final, calling the match a chance to "put it all on the line."
Shelton argued this tournament has already been about breaking new barriers, pointing to his quarterfinal upset of Carlos Alcaraz — his first win over a top-3 player after entering that match 0-3 against the Spaniard.
A 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 semifinal comeback over Frances Tiafoe sent Shelton into his first Grand Slam final after earlier wins over Tallon Griekspoor, Hubert Hurkacz, Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
New York's home crowd could be a major factor, Shelton said, adding that he expects the energy to help him against Zverev in the biggest match of his career.
A victory would make Shelton the first American man to win a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open.
