At a Friday rally at Michigan State University, Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed said decisions on sex changes for minors should rest with patients, parents and doctors, not the government.
El-Sayed, a physician by training, argued doctors are the relevant experts and said the same patient-provider standard should apply even if government-run healthcare pays the bill.
His comments came as the Trump administration has tightened restrictions on pediatric gender procedures; the Justice Department said this week Mount Sinai joined other hospitals in halting such treatments for children.
