Summary
Nearly 4% of Reddit users in Penn’s sample reported menstrual irregularities while discussing Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound, with chills, hot flashes and fatigue also surfacing as potential overlooked symptoms.
More than 400,000 posts from nearly 70,000 users over five years were analyzed with large language models, which mapped everyday descriptions to medical categories and also picked up known effects such as nausea.
About 44% of users described at least one side effect, but researchers said the study shows associations in online discussions—not proof that GLP-1 drugs caused the reported problems.
The team said reproductive and temperature-related symptoms merit follow-up because GLP-1 drugs act on pathways linked to the hypothalamus, while stressing Reddit skews younger, more male and more U.S.-based than the broader patient population.
Penn researchers said the approach could become a faster early-warning tool for drug and supplement safety, though they want to test whether the same patterns appear beyond Reddit and outside English-language communities.
