Sept. 2 near Alaska’s Killey River, moose hunter Gavin Haakenson escaped a brown bear attack with a shredded coat, a bruised shoulder and no broken bones.
The bear charged from about 10 feet away, knocked him down and pinned him before friend Ethan Yeager fired a pistol, driving the animal off in under 10 seconds.
Haakenson said he blacked out during the mauling and later hiked back to the truck with Yeager, shouting “hey bear” as they retreated.
Wildlife officers searched the area but did not find the bear, leaving Haakenson weighing whether to return despite saying he would like to track it down.
