More than 2,500 crystals adorned the gown, which Kardashian wore briefly before changing into a replica after saying she slimmed down dramatically to fit into it.
Art conservators and historians also criticized the loan, and an exhibit curator later cited stress to the zipper, straps, beads and sequins, though Kardashian and Ripley’s denied any damage.
The dispute became part of the legacy of one of fashion’s most famous archival garments and of Mackie, whose beaded designs dressed stars including Cher, Diana Ross and Tina Turner.
