Sondland Urges Canada to Forge New U.S. Deal, Not Join 27-Nation Europe Bloc

Ambassador Gordon Sondland argued Canada should reopen talks with Washington on a broader economic pact instead of pursuing closer alignment with Europe amid a strained bilateral relationship.
He said the U.S. and Canada need reciprocal negotiations on banking, dairy, procurement, digital rules, industrial subsidies and autos, replacing tariffs and public humiliation with parity between sovereign partners.
Sondland cast EU membership talk as legally implausible and economically damaging, warning Canada would surrender trade-policy control and risk new customs and regulatory barriers with its largest market.
He proposed a deeper North American framework covering autos, energy, critical minerals and skilled-worker mobility, with common rules, faster cross-border approvals and incentives favoring continental production.
