Summary
Eight patients were reported after the Tuesday evening crash in Chatsworth, with two pronounced dead at the scene and six taken to hospitals with injuries ranging from minor to critical.
Witnesses said the Ford SUV swerved into oncoming traffic, ran a red light and T-boned the Metro bus as it crossed Nordhoff Street near De Soto Avenue shortly after 5 p.m.
AIR7 footage showed firefighters extricating trapped victims, the SUV's front end crushed and a large hole torn into the left side of the 166 line bus near a bus stop.
One person killed was possibly ejected from the bus, while the second died onboard, though witnesses said the victim found outside may have been on the sidewalk before impact.
The intersection remained shut down as Los Angeles authorities investigated; about two hours later, a separate news helicopter crash near the scene killed three people.
