Summary
NOPD said it will not send any officers for Lane Kiffin’s security detail, reversing an earlier confirmation that four Mounted Division officers would go to Oxford.
The department blamed a miscommunication, while Louisiana State Police said they are coordinating with LSU, Ole Miss and the Mississippi Highway Patrol on heightened security for Kiffin and LSU players.
LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry said he is satisfied with the plan ahead of Saturday’s prime-time game, where both teams enter 2-0 and College GameDay is expected to draw large crowds.
Security concerns stem from Kiffin’s controversial departure from Ole Miss, with Gov. Jeff Landry publicly joking about using an F-16, a C-130 or even the National Guard.
The tense backdrop also includes the SEC’s lawsuit against LSU, Kiffin and Ausberry over alleged recruiting violations, though sources told WDSU expelling LSU from the conference is no longer under consideration.
