$1 billion a day is the estimated economic hit from a nationwide GPS loss, as cybersecurity expert Morgan Wright warns the U.S. is unprepared for unconventional attacks on positioning systems.
Wright argues modern transport, emergency response, agriculture, utilities and military operations all depend on trusted position data, making disruption more damaging than physical destruction of infrastructure in some scenarios.
China is fielding counterspace and electronic-warfare capabilities, according to the U.S. Space Force, while researchers in June linked at least three GNSS interference events over Europe to Russian satellite transmissions.
That threat is growing as the U.S. pours billions into AI, autonomous systems and robotic logistics that still require resilient positioning, pushing Wright to call hardened navigation and backup capabilities a national priority.
