Because measles can linger in the air and on surfaces for up to two hours, the risk was not limited to people in the same room at the same moment. It could include patients, family members, clinic staff, cleaners, and anyone else who entered the urgent care during that three-hour window. Maine CDC said the investigation is continuing and that the exposure information is “subject to change,” suggesting additional locations could still be identified if the patient’s movements before treatment are confirmed. The infectious window is also broader than the clinic visit itself. People with measles can spread the virus from four days before the rash begins until four days after, meaning the patient may have exposed others before realizing they were sick. But officials have not publicly released any other stops, travel details, or contacts tied to this case. For now, health officials are focused on notifying people linked to the Waterville clinic and advising anyone who was there to watch for symptoms through Oct. 3. Symptoms usually appear about 7 to 14 days after exposure and include fever, cough, runny nose, red watery eyes, and a rash that starts on the face or head and spreads downward.
