Q: Will Deshaun Watson's struggles against Baker Mayfield finally force Cleveland to admit their historic quarterback mistake?

Probably not by itself, but it would deepen the evidence that Cleveland already made a costly quarterback misread. The broad verdict on the Watson trade is no longer waiting on one Sunday in Tampa. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam has already described the 2022 move as a “big swing-and-miss,” and the production gap is stark. Watson has been uneven, injured, and inefficient in Cleveland, with 20 touchdowns in 20 starts and no 300-yard passing game as a Brown. His Week 1 return against Jacksonville did little to quiet concerns, even if the offensive line and overall team play also contributed. Mayfield’s resurgence in Tampa has only sharpened that contrast. He has become a stable, productive starter for the Buccaneers, earned major contract money, and helped keep Tampa competitive. If he clearly outplays Watson again, it would reinforce the perception that Cleveland moved off the wrong quarterback and paid an enormous price to do it. But “admit” is the key word. Publicly, the Browns are unlikely to frame any Week 2 result as a formal acknowledgment beyond what Haslam already said. Practically, their actions matter more than rhetoric. The real signal would be whether Todd Monken shortens Watson’s leash, turns to Shedeur Sanders if struggles continue, or the front office resets the position in the 2027 draft cycle. So a poor Watson showing against Mayfield would not create the verdict; it would intensify a verdict already forming and increase pressure on Cleveland to act on it.
