Gaston County officials warned of major traffic delays Wednesday as Donald Trump heads to Gastonia Municipal Airport for a campaign rally backing Republican Senate candidate Michael Whatley.
10 a.m. soft closures will begin before full shutdowns at 5:30 p.m., with restrictions staying in place through the evening as needed.
Union Road and Gaston Day School Road are expected to see the heaviest disruption, and police said the main impact zone will be south of I-85, east of U.S. 321 and west of South New Hope Road.
Detours will route drivers near Union, Robinson, Bud Wilson and Gaston Day School roads, while police urged motorists to avoid the area entirely if possible.
