That kind of reception can make a movie hard to place theatrically, even with major stars like Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Evans, Salma Hayek Pinault and John Malkovich. “Sacrifice” is also an unusual commercial proposition: a surreal, occult eco-thriller with dark comedy, hostage drama and art-house ambition. Films that are visually bold but tonally hard to classify often struggle to convince traditional distributors that they can find a broad audience in theaters. Netflix was a more natural landing spot. The streamer could market the cast, the spectacle and Gavras’ cult reputation without relying on box-office performance, and it could position the film as a curiosity-driven streaming event. So the year-long delay was likely the result of difficult post-festival sales conditions: divisive reviews, a challenging genre blend, and uncertainty over theatrical viability until Netflix stepped in.
