Pew Survey Finds 34 of 37 Countries Expect AI to Cut Jobs, Widening Inequality Fears

42,151 respondents across 37 countries told Pew they are more likely to expect AI to destroy jobs than create them over the next 20 years in 34 countries surveyed.
76% in Australia and South Korea and 71% in the United States said AI will cost jobs, with concern especially strong in wealthier economies.
41% — the global median — said they feel both concerned and excited about AI, compared with 37% primarily concerned and 13% primarily excited.
Younger adults aged 18 to 34 were most likely to report mixed views, but anxiety has risen sharply over the past year in countries including Sweden, Poland, Japan, Australia, Brazil and the US.
The survey, fielded from Feb. 8 to May 13, also found people generally expect AI to widen the gap between rich and poor, especially in wealthier left-leaning countries.
