Xbox Adds 1,400-Plus Disc-to-Digital Games as Ubisoft Brings Far Cry and Assassin's Creed

Q: If selling a physical disc revokes the digital license, how exactly is Microsoft tracking the whereabouts of your physical games?

Microsoft does not appear to be tracking the physical location of your disc in real time. The system is better understood as license tracking, not whereabouts tracking. Based on Microsoft’s own support language and reporting on the Insider test, each supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc carries a unique identifier. When you insert that disc and claim Disc to Digital, Microsoft ties a digital entitlement to that specific disc ID and to your account. If that same disc is later inserted by someone else and claimed on another account, the entitlement can move, and your access can be revoked. Microsoft’s public wording is careful: it says users “may be required to demonstrate continued possession” of the qualifying disc, and that access “may be limited or revoked” if the disc is lost, sold, or given away. That suggests the company is not literally watching where the disc goes, but checking ownership when the disc is used again in the Xbox ecosystem or when an account’s entitlement is revalidated. In practical terms, the disc itself functions like a transferable ownership token. If it never reappears online in another person’s console, Microsoft may have no direct way to know it changed hands. But once the disc is used to claim or verify access elsewhere, the system can reassign the linked license. So the short answer is that Microsoft is likely tracking a disc’s unique ID and account association, not its physical whereabouts.

The expansion eases early doubts about Disc to Digital, which launched last week in an Alpha test after players found major publisher gaps despite Microsoft's promise of "thousands" of compatible games.
More than 1,400 games have now been identified as working: users insert a disc in an Xbox One or Series X, and the console links a downloadable license to their Microsoft account.
The program still has limits: only registered Xbox Insider Alpha users can access it, no public release date is set, and licenses are lost if the physical copy is sold or lent out.
Big publisher holes remain, with Bandai Namco, Square Enix, SEGA and some Activision titles still incompatible as Microsoft says more games will be added in coming weeks.
