Sarah Paulson’s modern storyline is intertwined with Lizzie Borden’s 1892 case to give Netflix’s “Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story” a thematic bridge, not a literal historical link. The series uses Paulson’s Aileen Wuornos as a later echo of Borden in order to explore what the creators describe as a “legacy of female rage” and the broader question of why women kill. Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have said this season is especially focused on women’s violence, repression and psychology. Because Lizzie Borden is the anthology’s first female central figure, the show extends beyond the 1890s and connects her story to Wuornos, another notorious woman killer from a very different era. The idea is to compare how society reacts to women accused or convicted of murder, and how trauma, confinement, abuse and social expectations can shape them. Ella Beatty, who plays Lizzie, said the connection was meant to “map and explore” how female rage carries across generations. Brennan similarly described Wuornos as an “inheritor” of Lizzie’s bloody legacy. In the show, scenes set decades later are designed to thread that argument through the season. So Paulson’s storyline is there less to suggest Borden and Wuornos were historically connected than to frame Lizzie’s case inside a larger true-crime meditation on female violence, mythmaking and public judgment.

The Fall River, Massachusetts, house where Andrew and Abby Borden were killed in 1892 now operates as a bed-and-breakfast, museum and ghost-tour site tied to one of America’s most enduring true-crime cases.
US Ghost Adventures founder Lance Zaal bought the property for $1.8 million in 2021 and has kept it open to overnight guests, with rooms listed from $249 to $259 a night.
The 3,600-square-foot home has 8 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms and space for up to 20 guests, while preserving original doors and hardware alongside period-style furnishings and a gift shop.
Interest in the site persists because Lizzie Borden was acquitted nearly 10 months after her 1892 arrest, no one else was charged, and the double murder remains unsolved more than a century later.
That notoriety is getting a fresh boost from Netflix’s "Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story," the anthology series’ fourth installment, which premiered September 17.
