TMZ footage and photos of McConnell in a wheelchair fueled the spread, with users mixing concern about his health with jokes about his appearance and fitness for office.
One repost by @_TrillScott drew more than 2.7 million views and 170,460 likes in a day, helping make the car clip the dominant image from his return.
McConnell had been out since a mid-June fall at his Capitol Hill home left him briefly unconscious; he later developed mild pneumonia, was hospitalized and underwent rehabilitation before his early August discharge.
