Reviews and product comparisons suggest the improvement is noticeable, helped by the H2 chip, redesigned multiport acoustic architecture, and updated Adaptive EQ. But physics still matters. Because AirPods 5 keep an open-fit design rather than sealing the ear canal with silicone tips, they offer less passive isolation than in-ear buds or over-ear headphones. Active noise cancellation can suppress steady background sounds like traffic hum, engine noise, or office ventilation, yet it is less effective against louder, irregular, or high-frequency sounds that leak in through the open fit. That means AirPods 5 can likely deliver strong noise cancellation for an open-ear earbud, and perhaps class-leading performance in that niche, while preserving comfort and situational awareness.
