UT Austin Ends New Enrollment in 3 Gender and Ethnic Studies Majors

UT Austin has removed three majors from admissions applications—Women’s and Gender Studies, Mexican American and Latina/o Studies, and African and African Diaspora Studies—while allowing current students to finish their degrees.
The university said the change reflects shifting degree offerings in its Department of Social and Cultural Analysis after internal deliberations; an internal email indicated much of the coursework could remain under a consolidated program.
307 students were enrolled across those fields plus American studies earlier this year, the Austin American-Statesman reported, representing less than 1% of UT Austin’s 44,315 undergraduates in fall 2025.
The move comes as UT Austin faces pressure from Republican state and federal officials over race and gender-related teaching, and as other schools including Texas A&M, Wichita State, Iowa and Toledo have scaled back similar programs.
