A weeklong ICE-led operation in Southwest Florida netted 500 arrests, with authorities highlighting detainees accused of murder, child molestation and cartel ties.
More than five agencies joined the Aug. 24-27 sweep, including Florida Highway Patrol, the Lee County Sheriff's Office, the Florida National Guard and Customs and Border Protection.
Lee County deputies arrested 28-year-old Haitian asylum seeker Whycliff Longin after a Lehigh Acres attack that left one woman dead; he faces second-degree murder, attempted murder, sexual battery and burglary charges.
ICE also cited arrests of a suspected Mexican cartel member, a Honduran accused of molesting two children, and a Guatemalan accused of grabbing a trooper's Taser during his arrest.
Florida officials cast the operation as part of a broader state-federal enforcement push, with ICE saying all 67 county sheriffs in the state partner with the agency.
