Russian Developer Extradited to US Over 5,000-Login Bank Phishing Scheme

Sergei Anatolyevich Filimonov, 36, was extradited from Georgia to the United States after prosecutors accused him of helping run a bank account takeover scheme that stored more than 5,000 stolen banking logins.
Prosecutors say the group bought sponsored search ads that mimicked real banks, redirected users to fake login pages and then used captured credentials to access accounts, check balances and send unauthorized wire transfers.
A December 2025 DOJ action tied the same operation to ads on Google and Bing, identifying at least 19 U.S. victims, about $28 million in attempted losses and roughly $14.6 million in actual losses.
The case lands amid a broader surge in account-takeover fraud: the FBI says it has logged more than 5,100 complaints since January 2025 with losses exceeding $262 million, and advises users to reach banks through official apps or bookmarks instead of search ads.
