Washington approved visas for President Masoud Pezeshkian and Iran’s U.N. team but confined them to their lodging and U.N. headquarters during this week’s General Assembly in New York.
The restrictions come as Trump addresses the assembly Tuesday and Pezeshkian speaks Wednesday, creating a rare face-to-face diplomatic moment under heightened U.S.-Iran tensions.
U.S. officials and a former White House adviser said the limits are meant to block shopping trips and wider media access while still meeting America’s obligations under the 1947 U.N. host-country agreement.
Iran has called attendance a legal right, warned against any major new U.S. or allied attack, and set seven conditions for talks as Trump weighs renewed strikes after nearly 7 months of war.
UNGA could still open a narrow channel for closed-door discussions on regional security and a possible cessation of hostilities, with Trump also meeting Gulf leaders on the Strait of Hormuz.
