Texas Launches 3-Year Project Nexus for Piloted Air Taxi Flights at DFW

Sept. 10 marked the first phase of Texas' Project Nexus, a three-year TxDOT program that began piloted electric air taxi testing in North Texas without passengers onboard.
Joby Aviation's week-long campaign included routes to Arlington, Plano and a direct flight into DFW International Airport's controlled airspace, giving regulators data on how eVTOLs operate around one of the world's busiest hubs.
Traditional helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft are also being used in the opening phase to validate routes before broader advanced air mobility operations expand.
Later phases will shift toward cargo and medical missions—including moving organs and critical supplies between rural facilities and Austin or San Antonio—before any passenger flights across the Texas Triangle.
The Texas effort sits within a federal eVTOL Integration Pilot Program spanning eight projects in 26 states, while Joby says it is now in the fifth and final stage of FAA type certification.
