Summary
Two men in their 30s were arrested in Manchester on Sunday as counter-terrorism police said they had disrupted a suspected plot targeting the city’s Jewish community.
Police said the case stemmed from a long-running proactive investigation; the suspects were detained under Section 41 of the Terrorism Act after their 14:45 BST arrests on Newton Street.
Both men were taken to a London police station and can be held until Sept. 27, while searches at properties in Liverpool and Salford have now been completed.
Counter-terrorism police said they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public, but are providing extra protective support for Jewish communities during the High Holy Day period.
The Community Security Trust called the suspected plot “utterly chilling,” noting it came close to the anniversary of last year’s terrorist attack at Heaton Park Synagogue.
