Rod Brind'Amour said the NHL should eliminate the preseason entirely, arguing players want meaningful games and fans should not sit through exhibitions.
The Carolina coach said roster battles rarely justify preseason anymore because most teams are effectively set before camp, unlike earlier eras when more jobs were open.
His push comes after the NHL's latest collective bargaining agreement already cut preseason play from 6 games to 4 and added those dates to an 84-game regular season.
Neutral-site exhibitions still give the league a way to market itself in smaller cities such as Hershey, Pennsylvania, and Trois-Rivières, Quebec, even as pressure grows to trim more games.
