IonQ Launches Superion 256 as IBM Commits $10 Billion to Quantum Computing

IonQ has begun taking orders for Superion 256, a sixth-generation trapped-ion system built with SkyWater that shifts the company from research access toward selling a hardware roadmap.
That launch builds on April's photonic interconnect milestone, when IonQ linked two trapped-ion systems into a networked commercial setup—a step toward scaling quantum machines beyond a single box.
IBM is backing a broader infrastructure strategy with more than $10 billion over five years for quantum research, chip manufacturing, partnerships and acquisitions.
Its roadmap targets the fault-tolerant Quantum Starling system in 2029, designed to execute about 20,000 times more operations than current machines.
Together, the moves show hardware vendors racing to turn quantum computing from limited experiments into platforms for drug discovery, materials science, logistics and cybersecurity.
