Oleksandra was already a compromised double agent and, in Neretin’s view, did not want to be recruited into a more dangerous covert mission. Once the Americans used her beyond the information she had already given them, her survival chances dropped sharply. Neretin said Oleksandra’s position as a double-turned-triple agent meant her “days are numbered,” especially in the ruthless world the show portrays. So when Neretin said the creators ignored the most realistic fate, she meant they bypassed what she saw as the likeliest real-world outcome for someone like Oleksandra: being debriefed for her intelligence value and then discarded or left out of the field, rather than being absorbed into an active rescue mission. Even so, Neretin did not object to Taylor Sheridan’s choice. She said she expected Oleksandra to die once the story took that turn, and she understood why Sheridan used the death to underline the series’ larger point about the brutality of espionage.
