Ohio Doctor Gets 6 Months for Forced Abortion as Allies Press DOJ to Intervene

Six months in prison was the sentence imposed on Hassan-James Abbas, an Ohio surgical resident who pleaded no contest to four felonies after forcing abortion drugs on his pregnant girlfriend, who later miscarried.
Prosecutors said Abbas illegally obtained mifepristone and misoprostol using his estranged wife's identification, then held Jona Affholder down on Dec. 18, 2024 and shoved crushed pills into her mouth after she said she wanted to keep the baby.
Affholder reached a hospital after escaping Abbas's home, where she said she began hemorrhaging and ultimately lost the pregnancy; Abbas was arrested the next day, and abduction and evidence-tampering charges were later dropped in a plea deal.
On Tuesday, SBA Pro-Life America and Sen. Bernie Moreno urged Attorney General Todd Blanche to pursue federal action, arguing the six-month term was too light and linking the case to mail-order abortion-pill policies.
The case is being used to press for tighter controls on abortion medication, with critics saying telehealth prescribing and pharmacy mailing rules have outpaced legal penalties for nonconsensual use.
