The Guatemalan national, whom DHS said had been removed in 2021 and later re-entered the U.S. illegally, was the vehicle's sole occupant and was pronounced dead at the scene about a half mile away.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer ordered a state investigation as immigrant advocates pointed to the death as part of a recent string of ICE operations ending in shootings, injuries or fatalities.
