Congress Subpoenas Virginia Prosecutor Over 30-Arrest Suspect's Murder Case

Sept. 25 is the deadline House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan set for Fairfax County prosecutor Steve Descano after subpoenaing him over whether his office favored suspects in the U.S. illegally.
The congressional push comes as Cheryl Minter seeks Descano's removal, saying her daughter Stephanie's killing was preventable because the accused attacker, Abdul Jalloh, had been arrested more than 30 times before the Feb. 23 stabbing.
DHS said Jalloh, 32, entered the U.S. illegally in 2012, faced prior charges including rape, assault and theft, and was subject to an ICE detainer in 2020 before being charged with second-degree murder.
Descano's office called the subpoena a partisan escalation, said it had already turned over 1,100 pages and that Descano testified voluntarily; it is also prosecuting Jalloh, whose trial is set for January 2027.
The case has widened scrutiny of Descano's 2020 plea policy to consider immigration consequences, a practice the Justice Department said in May it was investigating without reaching conclusions.
