Corie Walsh Pleads Not Guilty in 2-Year-Old Son's Murder, Husband Poison Plot

Corie Walsh, 40, pleaded not guilty Thursday in Will County to charges that she killed her 2-year-old son Barrett and plotted to poison her husband, Michael Walsh.
Prosecutors say the Sept. 1 attack happened during an alleged psychotic episode and that Walsh strangled Barrett, left him hanging from a rafter and later tried to kill herself.
Defense lawyer Andrea Lyon said Walsh's family, including her husband, supports her and is seeking her transfer from jail to a hospital for psychiatric treatment.
That push faces a prior court ruling denying pretrial release as too dangerous after prosecutors argued Walsh posed a threat to her husband and the couple's three surviving children.
Former Chicago detective Eugene Roy said a psychiatric defense in a child-murder case is very rare, adding such arguments are more common in cases involving adult victims.
