Pro-Democracy Protesters Disrupt Xi's 134-Guest White House Dinner

Chants of “Free Hong Kong” and “freedom for political prisoners” carried from Lafayette Park into the White House on Thursday, at times drowning out Donald Trump and Melania Trump’s welcome for Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan.
Tibetan, Uyghur, Hong Kong democracy, Chinese pro-democracy and Falun Gong groups staged the protest to spotlight alleged Chinese human-rights abuses during Xi’s three-day state visit.
Demonstrators also pressed for prisoners’ release, including Uyghur doctor Gulshan Abbas, who disappeared in 2018 and was later sentenced to 20 years on terrorism charges her family says were fabricated.
Inside, 134 guests attended the state dinner, including top tech executives, as Trump and Xi prepared to discuss artificial intelligence, intellectual-property theft, trade practices and rare-earth minerals.
