Federal sources said Chukwunonso Eze, charged in the fatal stabbing of 19-year-old UMass Dartmouth player Marvins Antoine, entered the U.S. on a B-2 tourist visa in 2015, overstayed it and later received deferred action.
Two visa extensions were granted under the Obama administration, then deferred action was approved in September 2022 under Biden and again on Oct. 8, 2025, under Trump, according to the sources.
DHS said Eze sought work authorization in August 2023 and was denied the next month; a second application filed in February 2025 remains pending, and a murder conviction would end his deferred action.
Providence police said the stabbing followed a 12:30 a.m. Saturday altercation outside Mezzo Lounge, killing Antoine with a chest wound and leaving teammate Kensley Macean, 19, hospitalized with head and neck wounds.
