The “hidden” standard replacing Copilot+ is not a new consumer badge but a hybrid local AI stack built around Windows ML and broader “AI on the edge” messaging. Microsoft and Qualcomm are keeping the old Copilot+ hardware baseline largely intact in the background, including the idea of AI PCs meeting a high NPU threshold such as 45 TOPS. What is changing is the public framing. Instead of selling a branded category tied to one label, Microsoft is shifting toward a model where AI workloads can run across CPU, GPU and NPU, depending on what the task requires. Windows ML is the clearest sign of that new standard. Microsoft now presents it as the built-in Windows inference runtime for on-device AI, using ONNX Runtime compatibility and execution providers from AMD, Intel, NVIDIA and Qualcomm. That makes it a cross-silicon abstraction layer for local inference, rather than a badge consumers see on a box. In practice, the replacement for Copilot+ branding is a quieter capability standard: hybrid AI PCs that can run AI locally, privately and efficiently across multiple processors, while still connecting to cloud services when needed. That matches Microsoft’s newer language around hybrid computing, edge AI and Windows AI Foundry. So the label may be fading, but the real successor is a broader Windows hybrid AI platform standard, with Windows ML as its software foundation and the old Copilot+ performance bar still serving as the unofficial hardware reference.

Microsoft has stopped calling new Surface devices “Copilot Plus PCs,” even though the 12-inch Surface Pro and 13-inch Surface Laptop still meet the technical requirements.
Brett Ostrom told Windows Central the new models are not using the label, and Qualcomm executive Kedar Kondap said future PCs with the same features probably will not carry it either.
The branding retreat follows weak reception for the Recall feature, broader user irritation with AI upsells in Windows, and the fading distinction as AI-capable hardware becomes standard across PCs.
Microsoft now appears to be preparing a replacement message ahead of its October 7 event on local AI and the next chapter of the PC, with Nvidia-based flagship hardware also on the horizon.
