It would not automatically erase the new boundaries; it would determine whether they ever take effect. The Missouri Supreme Court has already ruled that the 2025 map is suspended by the valid veto referendum and “has never been the law” unless voters approve it. That is why the 2022 map remains in force for the November 2026 general election, and why the U.S. Supreme Court kept that older map in place to avoid last-minute disruption. So the referendum is more than a delay for this election. If voters reject Proposition A, the 2025 congressional map is effectively wiped out and will not take effect. If voters approve it, the 2025 map can become operative afterward, with the Missouri Supreme Court indicating it would take effect 30 days after voter approval. In other words, the current court rulings delay implementation for November 2026, but the referendum will decide the map’s long-term fate. As things stand now, the new boundaries are suspended, not permanently dead. Their survival depends on the statewide vote, unless later court action changes that legal framework before the election.
