$2 billion in Energy Department funding will back 31 projects across 26 states to pull more electricity from the aging U.S. grid and reduce blackout risk.
Those upgrades are expected to add more than 23 gigawatts of capacity—enough for 16 million homes—using tools such as real-time sensors and rerouting technology to ease transmission bottlenecks.
The department said the work could improve reliability and lower power costs for about 100 million Americans as electricity demand jumps.
AI-driven data center growth is the main pressure point, with new facilities coming online faster than new power plants can be built and, in some regions, helping push electricity bills up faster than inflation.
