Tony Blair said Europe would not win a conflict involving Russia without U.S. support, arguing Britain should preserve its alliance with President Donald Trump.
Blair said backing Trump’s request to use British bases was the prudent course because the United States remains an indispensable part of U.K. and Western security.
The former prime minister, who led Britain from 1997 to 2007, said he personally doubts Vladimir Putin threatens countries beyond Ukraine but acknowledged many Europeans fear wider hostile intent toward NATO.
Those warnings have intensified after incidents in Europe including an explosives-laden drone found near a Ukrainian cargo plane in Germany, alongside reported airspace violations and arson.
The remarks land as the U.S. and European allies keep trying to strengthen Ukraine’s defenses and deter Russia without being drawn fully into the war.
