Summary
FEMA won authority to coordinate federal aid and fund emergency measures after Trump approved Hawaii’s emergency declaration Friday, with Hurricane Nolo approaching the islands over the weekend.
Nolo was about 145 miles south of the Big Island on Saturday with 105 mph winds, and forecasters warned it could strengthen while dumping up to 20 inches of rain, triggering flash floods, mudslides and extreme surf.
Hawaii officials urged residents to assemble emergency kits, opened shelters for flood-prone areas and activated hundreds of National Guard members, while Hawaiian Electric repositioned crews across Oahu, Maui and the Big Island.
The preparations come as parts of Hawaii are still recovering from August’s Hurricane Lala, which swept about 100 homes off their foundations on the Big Island, and after crews were restoring outages from Hurricane Lowell.
