Jim Banks Pushes to Codify Trump Crackdown After 426 Indiana ICE Arrests

A five-day ICE operation across Indiana from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3 arrested 426 people, giving Senator Jim Banks fresh ammunition to press Congress to lock Trump’s immigration crackdown into statute.
Banks said executive enforcement can be reversed by a future administration, arguing only legislation can preserve tougher border and deportation policies beyond Trump’s term.
His seven-bill package targets birthright citizenship, family-based immigration, H-1B visas, noncitizens’ commercial driver’s licenses and congressional control over Temporary Protected Status.
Banks also tied the push to broader GOP priorities, faulting both Democrats for trying to defund ICE and the Republican-led Senate for not advancing the SAVE Act requiring proof of citizenship for federal voter registration.
The debate comes as ICE and DHS highlight other Indiana cases, including the Sept. 18 arrest of a Guatemalan national accused of illegally casting a federal ballot, to bolster arguments for stricter enforcement.
