Bruce Campbell is taking "Ernie & Emma" on a nationwide Alamo Drafthouse screening tour, backing an independent release he says gives him full creative control.
Campbell said he abandoned the studio route after his first studio film removed him from the lead, was re-edited and retitled, and ultimately never came out.
The actor wrote, directed, produced and stars in the film with wife Ida Gearon, shooting entirely in southern Oregon and calling the close-to-home production a model he "will never go back" from.
"Ernie & Emma" follows an Oregon pear salesman carrying out his late wife's final wishes, marking a turn from the horror and action roles that made Campbell a cult favorite.
The project carries added weight after Campbell disclosed a cancer diagnosis in March and said this month doctors had given him an estimated 5 years to live.
