Three House GOP committee chairs called ActBlue attorney Ronald Machen to a closed-door interview before Oct. 9, saying his Sept. 11 briefing conflicted with committee evidence on how the platform verified donors’ U.S. citizenship.
Committee letters say ActBlue accepted donations with foreign indicators, let staff use passport-field placeholders such as “ACTBLUEXX,” and sometimes skipped passport checks entirely on payments routed through Apple Pay or PayPal.
Republicans also argue Machen’s forensic review covered only 2023 and missed two 2024 relaxations in vetting, while citing a 2024 review by former outside counsel Dana Remus that warned some funds may have come from foreign nationals.
ActBlue denied wrongdoing, called the renewed probe a political stunt, and said a third-party forensic analysis had already undercut Republicans’ central claims; the interview request is not a legally binding subpoena.
