Gemini App Replaces Gems With Skills on Nov. 17, 2026

Nov. 17, 2026 is the date Gemini will start automatically migrating users’ Gems into skills, according to a new notice now shown in the Gems manager.
Skills serve the same core role as Gems—custom Gemini instructions—but Google is positioning them as easier to access, with slash-command invocation in the main chat and support for using multiple skills at once.
Gems currently also support default tools, attached files for context and shareable links, while users can keep using them until each one is migrated.
Google appears to have surfaced the change slightly early: the linked help page and Create skills button do not yet work, though AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers can already create skills from the Gemini Spark tab.
