Mexico Identifies 17 New Ayotzinapa Suspects as Phone Analysis Revives 2014 Case

Summary
Seventeen new suspects were identified in the 2014 disappearance of 43 Ayotzinapa students after prosecutors reanalyzed phone calls made the night the students vanished.
Mauricio Pazaran said the calls exposed links among public officials, police, organized crime figures and civilians, and showed a public employee and a municipal officer used two students’ phones days later.
Investigators also found an illegal weapon, a bone, and unregistered bone fragments and teeth at a funeral home; one new witness arrested in April was a minor at the time and allegedly belonged to Guerreros Unidos.
The case now has 168 people under prosecution, including 130 in pretrial detention, but no convictions and only three identified bodies despite years of arrests.
The new suspects emerge after fresh progress presented to families and after August arrests tied to deleted Iguala security footage, in a case that remains a national symbol of cartel violence and impunity.
